The Lee’s Palace Mural is Dead! Long Live the Lee’s Palace Mural!

Big Fat Burrito is moving into Lee’s Palace, and the building’s iconic painted façade, featuring monsters of every colour and form stretching across the length of the building’s first storey and reaching up to its second, has been quietly moved out.
This morning, construction workers began to break apart the wall—painted by artist Runt twenty-something years ago—piece by piece, the result of a deal struck in June between Big Fat Burrito and Lee’s that will see the take-out restaurant lease out space in the music venue and the entrance to Lee’s moved to the building’s side. Standing beside a few pieces of the mural cut out and saved for Runt (most of the rest of it landed in a dumpster around back), Big Fat Burrito owner Mike Shepherd explained that his store will open in two weeks’ time, the new second location for a store whose flagship is in Kensington Market.
Rather than stucco and concrete and mesh, Shepherd said, the building’s new façade will be metal, and it’s that new façade that’s being turned over as a new canvas to none other than Runt, whose work will fill the wall anew by spring.
Calls to Lee’s Palace this afternoon were not immediately returned, but according to Shepherd, the rest of Lee’s will continue to function just as it does now, and, when it opens, Big Fat Burrito will be selling concert tickets, too.

I’m not opposed to Big Fat Burrito but I loved that mural. After Honest Ed’s turned off its lights, Mel’s went out of business, and now with this mural being torn down, I am not sure if I’ll recognize Bloor in a few months.
Expansion out of Kensington, two burrito places on that strip on Bloor – there’s a lot going on.

Big Fat Burrito is going to make a fricking killing in that space.

Didn’t the same thing happen to Michelangelo once? I heard there used to be a great image of God & Adam on that Sistine Ceiling.

It’s a bit of a Big Fat Disappointment to see such a familiar sight replaced with just a fast food joint’s advertising. That said, waiting in line for the doors to open will be tastier now.

Guys, I was just back there, and there are lots of pieces of the mural in the back dumpster. It’s even open so you can walk right in. The pieces aren’t crazy huge, but they’re heavy – too heavy for me to carry on foot. Each is heavy like a couple Ikea flat-pack bookshelves. So if you have a car and/or a pack of friends, you can get some chunks of history. Just give me props, will ya? :-)

It’s sad to see the mural go, but let’s be grateful; it isn’t going to be yet another sushi shop, Starbucks, or McDonalds.
I wonder if it’ll be operating in time for the Constantines 10th anniversary show on the 11th-12th.
Also: Two weeks ago I walked by and a chunk of the mural was missing, revealing a flight of crumbling concrete stairs going up to the second floor. Freaky. Had no idea those were there.

Oh man, this is a killer deal for the Big Fat guys – hopefully they’ll deal with 3am line-ups quicker than Burrito Boyz.

Thanks! Just went and grabbed a piece. Fuckin’ heavy!
    …still big pieces there…

I’m going to reserve my judgment until it goes up, but when they say the new façade will be metal, that scares me. I’ve seen too many cool brick buildings downtown get clad in dark brown corrugated metal. You know, this kinda bullshit. And this. And this. And this (and those are all only on a small stretch of Yonge). I’m assuming that’s not what they’re talking about, but we’ll see.

Hopefully the new Runt mural will be just as awesome, but I’m also worried about how a metal facade will look. It looks really nice as it is.

meant “The building looks really nice as it is.”

This is actually going to be Runt mural #3 on the Lee’s facade. Mr. Lee had the original Run mural painted out in ’90 or ’91 when he was trying to go after the Rock’n'Roll Heaven crowd . . . after about six months of plain white, staff, community and bands (amidst the grunge boom) convinced him to have it re-Runted.

. . . so just to clarify, that mural was probably about 18 years old, and the previous one was probably there about 8 years when it was painted out. Let’s hope the next one stays for 28 at least!

The temporary stripping of the mural gives us a better view of Lee’s past as the Bloor Theatre. I just posted some info along with some great pictures at 32 Elvis Movies.

I think it’s a huge improvement. The mural, while memorable, was ugly as sin. The building has a beautiful facade.

Looks to me like it would be a better idea to restore what is underneath and put the muralist to work on the interior.

I just noticed the new Money Mart across the street the other day. I guess that’s proof the neighbourhood is in decline.
