It turns out that technology once only dreamed about in the back of comic books is now a reality: T-ray scanners may soon be deployed at an airport near you, and they know what you look like naked. Transport Canada is now reviewing a six-month trial of the security scanners, which are currently only voluntary and are used only when someone has set off the metal detector. The subject's body is scattered with terahertz radiation, which—unlike X-rays—are believed to be harmless to human tissue. A technician reviews the scanner results in a windowless room, and the resulting images are anonymous, incredibly unflattering, and decidedly unerotic. Images can't be stored, faces are obscured, and cameras aren't allowed in the viewing room. Still, opponents say that peering at nude bodies is even too extreme for already-excessive security theatre, and may even run afoul of child porn laws. According to a spokesperson from the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority, however, 95% of travellers in the Kelowna, B.C., trial preferred it. If approved by Transport Canada and the Canadian privacy commissioner, the high-tech peepshow could be coming to Toronto airports soon.

I'd much prefer it then the current entry into Gitmo setup where you have to remove your belt and your shoes as you wait in line for the guy to check you. Having someone taking a look at my insides doesn't bother me as much.
this sounds like they're going to look at my outsides, which i am terribly ashamed of...
Truly security theatre .... over the past few years I have read a couple of reports on-line about how ineffective these procedures are and I think 60 Minutes did an expose on it in 2008.
Here is the 60 Minutes story:

Exactly. Because it's not like the rest of the airport facility is secure.
Remember when the computers went down at LAX a few years ago? There were thousands upon thousands of people waiting at the airport. Talk about a target rich environment. No one seemed to worry about saftey and security during that incident.
Arnold Schwarzenegger had to go through such a scanner in the movie "Total Recall" back in 1990. Had a bit of trouble with it as I recall.
I only wish the process was consistent. I am not a frequent flyer, but I travelled three times to the west coast, once to the east coast and once to Bermuda in the last twelve months. I try to do the same thing each time I enter the restricted area; coins and keys into my jacket to go through the x-ray and me through the scanner. Most times, no beeps; but occasionally a wand, sometimes a pat down and rarely rubber gloved hands checking my nether regions. I'm consistent, why isn't the process?
