At Least You'll Be Able to Tell Your Mom You Found a Job in Media

This is not the building in which the elevator resides, but check out that symbolism. Photo by Wai, from the Torontoist Flickr Pool.

So you spent tens of thousands of dollars on a journalism degree from a good school and now you're pulling espresso shots for suits like some kind of industry cliché. Well, pull yourself up by your bootstraps, kid. CTV's got a job that you are eminently qualified for!

Wait, you've got experience with Otis 1918 Vintage Elevators, right? What, did you skip lecture that day or something?

According to this job ad, posted yesterday, qualified applicants for the position of elevator operator at CTV's offices in the Masonic Temple at Yonge Street and Davenport Road will, in addition to equipment expertise, possess "good interpersonal and communications skills for conversing with guests and employees." Oh, and you should also have the ability to pay attention to detail. People hate being let off on the wrong floors.

Now go get 'em!

Newsboys and now elevator operators?

The best thing is that it was posted on Media Job Search Canada. Bummer.

Even in the Workopolis ad, the job category is "broadcasting."

This gives literal meaning to the old expression, "be nice to the people on the way up..."

Seriously, this should underscore how competitive the market is for entry-level media jobs. You are expected to literally go down with everyone to get ahead.

Maybe I should apply. I've operated manual elevators
going all the way back to 1958!

The elevators at the Masonic Temple are badass. It'll take some practice to hit the floor right on though.

haha, and btw, has anyone actually found a paying job on Ontario's Work In Culture site which has been inundated with internships and volunteer recruiting (free labour!), some culture!

Me!

In fundraising though. For an arts org at least though.

This is not nearly as bad as the "contest" CityTV held to find some gullible fool to do a promotions and social media job for free: http://www.third-beat.com/?p=916

And to the previous commenter: nope, the Work In Culture site is a joke. And free labour hurts everyone, even those of us mid-career. How is this allowed to happen?
