Canadian International Air Show 2009: Airborne

Photographer Hamish Grant has been documenting the Canadian International Air Show for Torontoist, and in previous installments, we’ve explored some Canadian history, featured the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, and offered a closer look at some vintage fighters and contemporary stunt planes. In our final gallery, the planes take flight over Lake Ontario, showcasing mind-boggling aerobatics and cutting-edge technology. For many, it was an exhilarating chance to see big, loud machines do their thing; for some, it was a tacky glorification of weaponry; others are just happy about the return of quiet skies.

Excellent photos Hamist! You must be pleased with them.
I have to say though, the setup for the airshow really sucks for both photography and viewing. Having the sun behind the planes is frustrating and makes sunglasses essential just to view the silhouettes.
That said, this year’s show had a pretty good program. Both the Blue Angels and the F-22 Raptor were impressive displays. The acrobatic pilots were equally stud And the Snowbirds put on a beautiful show as always.
I miss the Hamilton Air Show. :)

Thanks guys… I’m pretty well air showed-out for this year, let me tell you! Not quite deaf, though… I had earplugs! :-) should’ve worn them for the first day, the arrival of the Blue Angels at Pearson’s north terminal. All six of them coming along the taxiway, only 100 feet away from me, the roar from the engines was quite unbelievable! This year’s show was wicked, though, really enjoyed myself and I hope to do it again next year!

    Great photos.
I do fall under the category of being happy for quiet skies again, but I think there is something to be said for the talent involved and he amazing show that was put on.

Great photos…the air show was a lot of fun again this year. The Raptor was awesome to see.

Personally, I dislike the noise and don’t understand why setting up for the showline couldn’t take place over the lake rather than over the city. Five days of noisy planes is four and a half days to much.
Not to mention the occasional fatalities in the name of entertainment.

    I photo are fantastic.
Still, I find the Air Show disturbing.
For a couple of hours every year WMD’s are flown over the city.
It’s as though the government or the military are making a not so subtle point about who is ultimately in control.
I also wonder about what sort of people want to look at WMD’s on their day off?
