We Gotta Know Who Lullabye Arkestra Loves

Breaking news: bands are bands because of their love for other bands. It's true. While it's often easy (and so fun and we're sure it results in opinions totally agreed upon all the time, by everyone) to pick out an artist's musical influences or identify a sound of an album, it might be more time and cost (and safety) effective to just let the band tell us of whom, exactly, they are not worthy.

When Vice Records asked Lullabye Arkestra if they wanted to do a series of live cover videos, "We Gotta Know" by the terrifyingly testosteroney New York hardcore band Cro Mags (here's their video) was a must on the list. Justin Small and Kat Taylor-Small set up, played, it was filmed, and they spoke about it like the giddy and grateful music fans that they are. It's hands (eyes?)-on training for those who may not yet get Lullabye's creepy, heavy post-rock soul jam.

This is the first of four of the lo-fi, lo-commitment clips, and the band is sharing it with Torontoist first. Fancy! The other three? They are a mystery. But if you like rock music history and enjoy hearing it filtered through the smarty-pants brains of some of the city's best, you can follow the online treasure hunt by keeping watch over the band's MySpace.

nice. they owned that cover!

They should consider doing a crass cover or two, the bassist/singer's voice sounds remarkably like Eve Libertine.

Shaved women anyone?
