Urban Planner: August 3, 2009

Urban Planner is Torontoist’s daily guide to what’s on in Toronto, published every morning. If you have an event you’d like considered, email all of its details—as well as images, if you’ve got any—to events@torontoist.com.

WALKING TOUR: Looking for a new spin on the merits of Yonge Street’s “gaudy” appeal? Perhaps a reasoned argument detailing the connections between the work of Toronto-born architect Frank Gehry and singer/pop-phenom Christina Aguilera? Then “Chicken Fat Perambulation #2” might be your type of historical walking tour. Hosted by Adam Sobolak (author of Pioneers Of Modern Design: From Britney Spears to Christina Aguilera and executive member of the Toronto Architectural Conservancy), this walkabout is billed as “metatouristic linear street theatre” and will be more of an “‘arts performance’ in the guise of a guided walk.” The walk will start at the northwest corner of Yonge and Front streets and proceed north every two hours until they hit Steeles Avenue (definitely not for the couch-potato set). Northwest corner of Yonge and Front streets, 4–6 p.m., pay-what-you-can ($5 or $10 suggested).
SALE: For the next week you can check out the 38th Annual Summer Antiques Sale at Sherway Gardens, where you’ll find so many cool vintage, retro, antique, and collectible items that you’ll wish you had a car to take them home. The sale will feature everything from Chanel accessories and Parisian furniture to vintage fashions and original Hollywood art—plenty of items to drool over. Sherway Gardens (Hwy 427 & the QEW), 10 a.m.–6 p.m., FREE.
FESTIVAL: This is the last day to enjoy Island Soul at the Harbourfront Centre. As part of the Caribana festivities in Toronto, Island Soul is a yearly mash-up of island culture—food, music, dancing, and family-friendly events—all contained within Harbourfront’s ample event space. There is “Djollification: Get Ready for Jump-Up Parade,” a kid-friendly carnival of stilt-dancers, face-painting, calypsoca music, and traditional feathered head-dresses at the HarburKidZone Tent and Redpath Stage. There will also be various artists performing at the Redpath Stage and the Sirius Stage, including Swingin’ Stars, Dominica’s longest-running band at fifty years; and the Heritage Singers, who specialize in folk music. Harbourfront Centre (235 Queens Quay West), day starts at 12 p.m., FREE.
NATURE: Monday is looking to be a pretty beautiful day, so why not take a leisurely canoe ride to the picturesque Toronto Islands? Now that the strike is over, there’s sure to be a lot of interest in the Islands, and the ferries will be clogged with people trying to enjoy the last vestiges of summer. Making use of Canoe Toronto‘s historic Voyageur Canoes, you and up to seventeen other paddlers can make your way from Centre Island to Algonquin Island, hitting everything in between. The Harbourfront Canoe and Kayak Centre (283A Queens Quay West), 12:30–3:30 p.m., $25 (pre-register at 416-993-4224).

Though I must say, I probably wouldn’t go as much into Xtina-ish stuff now as I would’ve a few years ago, mostly because “Pioneers Of Modern Design” speaks for itself at this point–and given the pace of and lessons learned from CFP#1, probably won’t get as far as the Zanzibar today, either (re the attached image)
