ART: In celebration of Amnesty International‘s sixtieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), a mural is being unveiled as part of “Project: Urban Canvas.” The project came together under the leadership of the Art in Action team, along with consulting services donated by Mural Routes. The goal of the mural series—created by community members and artists armed with colourful palettes, not to mention heaps of creativity and enthusiasm—is to raise awareness about human rights violations that are occurring worldwide. The artwork at Midland Park is one of thirty murals across the city—some completed, others still in progress—representing the Articles in the UDHR. Midland Park (Ellesmere Road and Midland Avenue), 6 p.m., FREE.
MUSIC: The Toronto Music Garden, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, continues to be open for free guided tours on Wednesday mornings until the end of September, while private group tours are available all other weekday mornings at the cost of five dollars per person. During the forty-five minute walking tour, led by Toronto Botanical Garden volunteers, visitors will learn about the local oasis—inspired by Bach’s First Suite for Unaccompanied Cello and conceived by famed cellist Yo-Yo Ma and landscape designer Julie Moir Messervy. Toronto Music Garden (475 Queens Quay West), 11 a.m., FREE.
FILM: A cluster of third- and fourth-year York University students present “Alt Vault,” a showcase of experimental films on a diverse range of subject matter. The shorts—three to fifteen minutes in length—were created as part of The Alternative Film Project Workshop taught by Professor Philip Hoffman. The featured filmmakers-in-training include Ariana Andrei, Sarah Devine, Tess Marie Garneau, Mark Hanson, James Harris, Tara Khalili, Meelad Moaphi, Owen Sheppard, and Brad Tinmouth. Cinecycle (behind 129 Spadina Avenue), 8–11 p.m., $5 or PWYC.
WORDS: Pivot, the local bi-weekly poetry and fiction reading series, is teaming up with Taddle Creek literary magazine for a special collaboration. Tonight’s showcase, co-hosted by Carey Toane and Taddle Creek editor-in-chief Conan Tobias, will feature readings from six of the magazine’s notables: Tony Burgess, Evie Christie, Heather Hogan, Alexandra Leggat, Nathaniel G. Moore, and Adrienne Weiss. The Press Club (850 Dundas Street West), 8 p.m., PWYC.
