Toronto city councillors impatiently awaiting federal money from Canada’s stimulus package have been politely told that they’ll finally get the funds this week. The stimulus money—which the City plans to spend on about five hundred infrastructure projects—was promised in January, but with Toronto’s construction season running out, we have yet to see a dime so far.
A Toronto anti-crime activist seems to be a bit of a cold case, herself. Olukemi Olunloyo, an outspoken advocate for the families of murder victims in her community, is wanted in the U.S. on seven warrants stemming from alleged offenses that ranged from cruelty to children to intimidating a juror. The Star, following up on a story they ran about five weeks ago, reports that U.S. authorities are seeking Olunloyo’s extradition to the State of Georgia.
It’s now officially easier to get a cab to the airport. The provincial government has made a surprise alteration to the City of Toronto Act, formally ending Toronto’s attempts to ban airport limos from competing with regular city cabs for downtown passengers headed to Pearson. Obviously, neither the City nor its taxi drivers are pleased with Queen’s Park undermining Toronto’s authority, but for the average Torontonian, it means about six hundred and fifty more cabs will remain available to make the drive to Malton.
A woman who claimed that a man armed with a gun forced her to drive to Toronto all the way from New Brunswick has admitted she made the whole thing up. Marcia Simmons may face public mischief charges over the surprisingly detailed fabrication, which fooled Toronto Police (and the media) but her story couldn’t squirm past the steel-trap-like minds of RCMP investigators.

Could it be that the previous story in The Star

about the GTA getting no stimulus money actually moved the feds into action?

“Toronto taxi drivers are also prohibited from picking up at Pearson unless the trip is prearranged and they pay a $10 fee to the airport.”
Why couldn’t Jim Watson have gotten rid of this restriction too? Or is it because GTAA is federally owned? One more reason to use the City of Toronto’s own airport – Toronto Island!
