After thirty years, one of Toronto's most legendary independent bookstores will close its doors for good in only a few more hours. At Pages Books and Magazines, customers are scouring the almost bare shelves looking for an excuse to make one more purchase.
Tonight the store will be open late—last we heard, a good bit past 10 p.m.—hosting an informal goodbye and letting people take one last look around and share their own stories. On September 8, the Gladstone will host a tribute to the store and its proprietor, Marc Glassman, "Afterword: A Celebration Of 30 Years."

Why didn't they just move somewhere cheaper? :(
They could have easily moved somewhere and the loyal clientele would have followed.
It's weird that they're just throwing in the towel like this.
There are tons of places in Kensington mkt or on Spadina or Dunds West that have been empty forever.
It's not that simple, so many businesses have been effectively thrown out of their premises by rent hikes. It's not surprising that someone doesn't want to leap into one frying pan straight into another.
I know the desire is there to reopen Pages but they would have to be crazy to rent and have the same thing happen all over again. I suspect if we see Pages reborn it will be in a premises they own.
I used to live above Le Select, a restaurant near Queen and Peter. They were kicked out by rent hikes (as were we) but had six month's notice and were able to buy new premises on Wellington.
Wow, this is terrible news.
First Mel's on Bloor, now Pages on Queen... Toronto I fear your unique and delightful commercial spaces are turning into an outdoor Eaton Centre...
