Strike Watch: Day Fourteen

As the city accumulates garbage throughout the ongoing city workers’ strike, we’ll be accumulating photos. Torontoist’s photographers are checking in on garbage and recycling bins around the city throughout the strike, an attempt to follow the tangible effects of the strike and complement our other coverage.

Whenever they get around to signing a new contract, I hope they set it to end in the deep winter, so that a) all the garbage will at least be frozen, and b) the tourists don’t have to see such a sad state of affairs.

interesting mess… at least the garbage is separated from the recycling by the looks of things.

It’s common to continue working without a contract while still negotiating.
This means even if the contract ends in January, they can keep working, then vote for a strike in July. They want to maximize their strength and importance to the city and who can blame them?

The contract did expire in January; as Svend suggests, they were indeed working without a contract while “negotiating” since then. The strike deadline was set some months ago I believe, and of course the union blames the city for dragging their heels in getting an offer on the table in advance of that.
Winter strikes have their own problems, given that the same union is responsible for snow plowing.
