Ontario pledges cash to fight Toronto gangs (Globe and Mail): “The Ontario government has pledged $10-million to extend a Toronto community policing program meant to battle gang violence in the city. The Toronto Anti-Violence Intervention Strategy, championed by Police Chief Bill Blair, keeps officers visible in at-risk communities, requiring them to patrol on foot or on a bicycle in hopes of building relationships with residents.”
Miller defends green bins (Toronto Star): “Mayor David Miller broke his silence on Toronto’s flawed green bin program yesterday… A Star investigation..reveal[ed] on the weekend that thousands of tonnes of organics were dumped in a gravel pit, landfilled in Quebec or stockpiled in city transfer stations long before the workers’ strike.”
Stintz, Hudak want “a Toronto that works” (Globe and Mail): “‘I want a Toronto that works.’ Could that be Karen Stintz’s rallying cry when (if?) she runs for mayor in 2010? The councillor for Ward 16 (Eglinton-Lawrence) gave the slogan a test run Tuesday before a receptive Economic Development of Canada lunch crowd of about 160 people.”
Pride parade cash got file pulled from Ablonczy: Tory MP (CBC): “Minister of State for Tourism Diane Ablonczy is no longer responsible for the delivery of a key tourism stimulus package, and one of her caucus colleagues says it’s because her office gave some of the money to…Toronto’s Pride Parade, which was held this year on June 28.”
Globe union backs down (NOW Magazine): “Four hundred plus workers in editorial, advertising and circulation at the national newspaper voted 86 per cent in favour of a new contract Monday after the strike deadline was extended last Tuesday.”
Canadian hospital pioneers mental-health treatment (Globe and Mail): “[The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health] will be the first in the world to use a combination of genetic testing and brain imaging to help determine the best course of treatment for patients with schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder and other mental illnesses.”
