Extreme makeover for John St. (Globe and Mail): "Under a massive makeover plan to be launched Tuesday by the local Business Improvement Area, John Street would be turned into a promenade linking five of six planned “character precincts” and creating a new north–south spine for a neighbourhood that is best known today for its rowdy Richmond Street club zone."

John Tory, mulling run for mayor, criticizes the Miller years (National Post): "Toronto taxpayers are sick of paying more and getting less, and are looking for a leader who presents a clearly thought—out vision for the city’s economy, finances and infrastructure, says John Tory, who is mulling a run for mayor."

Union and city dig in on issue of sick leave (Globe and Mail): "Sick leave remains one of the big stumbling blocks in negotiations between Toronto and its unionized workers as a strike deadline looms less than a week away and the city's non-union employees grumble about possible deferred vacations."

Zoo's Tessa to be buried by Rouge River (Toronto Star): "An elephant graveyard lies on the banks of the Rouge River, on Toronto Zoo lands out of bounds to the public. [Tessa's] health problems from birth included poor muscle tone and trouble using her trunk, he said. A 60-page autopsy performed Sunday also showed an enlarged heart.

• When a Conservative starts talking about campaigning on the economy, run the opposite direction.

• Redesigning John Street won't make any difference if there's still no reason to go there. I can sit on a bench anywhere in the city.

John's not bad. It has:

  • OCAD and the AGO
  • the park and the Music Gallery
  • Urbane and Umbra
  • Much Music on one of the big intersections on Queen West
  • A Firkin pub
  • The NFB
  • The Paramount theatre
  • a bunch of restaurants and clubs
  • Metro hall

It beats most streets in town.

Also, the city is lacking in North-South streets that are worth going to. Sprucing up John is a good idea.
