On May 29, 2008, the Toronto Cyclists Union was launched. And much as he had done to kick off his earlier group, founder Dave Meslin called on his Torontopian indie-rock buddies to put on a show at the Bloor.
Three Broken Social Scenesters, seven Hidden Cameras, and three Shortbus passengers were among the shadow cast that performed Pee-wee's Big Adventure, Rocky Horror–style—recreating the movie on stage moment by moment, as it played on the screen behind them. Two TV monitors in the front row helped keep the actors in sync, and led by Lex Vaughn in the title role, and with props and costumes by former Torontoister Stacey Kityana, the whole thing came off like the best movie ever Sweded.
Bob Wiseman and Darren O'Donnell were on hand to videotape the two sold-out performances, and in honour of the first anniversary of the Bike Union, Meslin has now edited down the footage into a YouTube–friendly highlight reel that condenses the whole Pee-wee Herman Picture Show into ten giddy, Danny Elfman–drenched minutes.
