There Will Be Blood Problems

"Stop messing in my ward or there will be problems. I generally ignore your actions, but I am going to start looking for ways to cause trouble for you, and when I start you're not going to appreciate it." That's, uh, the usually cool-headed Councillor (and TTC Chair) Adam Giambrone, in an email to Councillor Cesar Palacio, which Giambrone has since apologized for—but which will nonetheless still be investigated by the City's integrity commissioner. You can read a lot more about it in the Star and Post and watch a video from the Sun. Oh, yeah, and Giambrone's Facebook status tonight, updated at 7:52? "Adam Giambrone is walking home—no TTC—to clear his mind and to enjoy the nice weather."

I'm reminded of this paragraph from something I wrote for Eye last year:

"The TTC and the city have exactly zero ability to enforce traffic restrictions" due to legislation "going back over 100 years," responded Chair Adam Giambrone, his annoyance at the status quo bubbling up. "Even a unanimous vote of Council cannot compel police to do anything. I don't have power over health services or national defense, either.... Sometimes the police aren't too pleased when we push [them], but too bad." In his frustration over his legislated impotence, Giambrone — who is usually characterized by his obsessive diplomacy, lest he ever provide a soundbite that could be used against him when seeking higher office — unleashed a fire, a passion, an honesty that he had previously kept muffled in public. Joe Clark and I, somewhat in awe, agreed it was the first time we'd "heard him speak like a human." He should trust himself more, and trust that people are more inspired by an Adam Vaughan than a Sandra Bussin.

If speaking like a human means he's going to be a dick, I'd prefer him to go back to the way he was.

Palacio is the scum of the earth and deserves whatever he gets. This guy has cheated his way through his two election campaigns and is among the worst of the worst on city council. That Giambrone finally gave Palacio a piece of his mind isn't the classiest thing but it had to happen eventually. 2010 can't come soon enough for ward 17.
