Squealing Better

Wiggles the Pig is having both a bad and a good day—bad because she fell off a moving transport truck on the 401, but good because she's been saved from becoming someone's dinner.

Earlier today, a driver saw Wiggles get squeezed out of the reportedly overloaded livestock truck, causing the pig's leg to break at the knee and inflicting some painful bruises and abrasions. The driver pulled over to retrieve Wiggles (named by Toronto Humane Society workers) and bring the six-month-old piglet to the Society's River Street shelter. The driver of the truck likely didn't notice that the animal fell out.

The Toronto Humane Society says that Wiggles will be scheduled for surgery to repair her leg once she is stabilized. The THS doesn't adopt out livestock unless an applicant lives on a farm, so when she heals, she will live out her days at a petting zoo or a hobby farm, blissfully unaware of her lucky break.

The other picture is sad. I hope that Wiggles gets better soon and lives a long and rewarding life in the field of her choosing.

The idea of the overloaded livestock truck is one of the reasons that I stopped eating meat.

Poor little girl!

Wiggles!!!

I wrote a blog about our phone call this morning just for fun. Hope your doing well girl.

My girlfriend used to work at a city-run petting zoo for a number of years and while it's certainly a much, much better life it's not necessarily all that much longer.

Piglets grow up rather quickly and soon become rather difficult to deal with and consume quite a bit of food. Not to mention not being particularly cute. Every year they had three new, adorable little piglets. At the end of the season those same piglets went... "away".
