Harper Sheppards a Billion Bucks to the TTC

As predicted by Spacing—and now confirmed by the National Post—the federal government is set to pump around $1 billion into the Sheppard light-rail transit line, described as the most “shovel-ready” of the TTC’s Transit City LRT routes (the Star reports that construction is now expected to begin this fall). Today’s announcement, made by Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Premier Dalton McGuinty at the Transit Commission’s Hillcrest Complex, follows last month’s commitment by the provincial government of $9 billion for Transit City and other Toronto-area public transit initiatives. Still no word on funding for the city’s coveted Bombardier Flexity streetcars, however—a fact sure to keep Mayor David Miller and TTC Chair Adam Giambrone grumbling, though they’ll likely tone their complaints down a notch, at least for today.

    Looking at what the TTC did on St. Clair, I have a hard time getting excited about Transit City’s surface lines. Wake me up when they fund the tunnel under Eglinton.

    McGuinty announced funding for Finch West and Eglinton (including the tunnel) about a month ago. So wake up, I guess!

    I thought transit city was supposed to cost in the neighbourhood of $6 billion. What happened?

    Transit City was originally budgeted at $6B 2007 dollars. Since then, some of the projects have greatly changed; Eglinton was extended 3km into the airport from the original terminus at Renforth, and the tunnelled section was extended from Keele to Jane in the West, and tunnelled portions were added from Laird to Don Mills in the East. The Finch line was also extended to Woodbine Complex and the airport from Humber College in the West, and from Yonge to Don Mills Station via Finch East. The Sheppard East/Finch connection at Don Mills Station adds some complex construction.
    And also, the actual spent numbers now include inflation through to the end date of construction.

    This is just for one line from transit city. And numerous other lines have already gotten their funding.
