Buffin' the Dufferin

Bloorcourt residents, rejoice! Dufferin Station will be the next station to receive upgrades. Plans to revitalize Dufferin Station were presented yesterday at Dovercourt Baptist Church, where TTC representatives were on hand to discuss the plans and field questions from the community. The forty-one million dollar project, led by Project Manager David Grigg, is slated to start later this year, and will take two and a half years to complete.

Among the improvements you’ll enjoy in the near future are canopies to bus waiting areas on both sides of the street, a reconfigured main building, new entrances to the station, new signage, elevators, and art!

Your new Dufferin Station will also be an environmentally conscious one. The fluorescent T-12 lights currently operating in the station will be swapped with more energy efficient T-8 bulbs. And, because the new entrance of the building has been designed to use sunlight to light the station during daytime hours, the overall consumption of energy will be reduced.

Ah yes, Bloorcourtians, your day has arrived. And about time too—Dufferin Station hasn’t seen major upgrades of any kind since it first opened for service in 1966. But celebrations may have to wait just a tad bit longer. It seems the residents of New Horizon, the apartment building located on the northwest corner of Bloor and Dufferin, have some issues with the project. Should the west-end entrance go as planned, the driveway to the building’s only parking lot may become unusable. Most of New Horizon’s 180 residents are seniors and retirees attended to by a full-time nurse, and delivery of supplies is pretty important. Also, the subway sign at the entrance is sure to turn into a second sun at night. Their rooms being so nearby, it’ll be a veritable nightlight for those who haven’t had to sleep with one for a long time now.

Once these issues have been discussed, and the plans tweaked accordingly, Dufferin Station will probably become the hottest spot in Toronto. No, not really! It’s just a station!

It would be nice if the folks doing these renderings could provide "before" shots of the same views. Cheesy "home reno show" fade-in effects optional obviously :)

Will these plans be mounted in the station after the meeting? After all, what else will they do with the posterboards other than scrap them?

I like how part of the "revitalizing" seems to involve getting rid of everyone who isn't white. It makes me wonder if the person who made these artist renditions of the "new" Dufferin Station has ever been to Dufferin Station.

A five or six story mixed used complex would make good use of this prime real estate, the city could have made money and still used it as a subway station.

Isn't most of the station's footprint actually the church above ground?

I can't articulate why but the way this was written made me laugh, particularly the last sentence. I think my funny bone is wedged halfway between earnesty and sarcasm.

The sidewalk/entrance on the west side is always overflowing with people. I'm sure 2 years on construction will only improve the situation.

So ... we shouldn't renovate it, ever? I'm not sure construction's ever been convenient for anyone, but I think the payoff is presumed to be worth it.

Yes, Gloria, that's exactly what I'm saying.

Well, as long as we're clear.

This kind of writing.. it just reeks of trying too hard.

@Svend:

you've got the right idea. When we continually consider our spaces as single-use, we've got a problem.

leveraging infrastructure as a part of development is key.

the city wont be broke if they could use their heads
