Urban Planner: April 29, 2009
Urban Planner is Torontoist’s daily guide to what’s on in Toronto, published every morning. If you have an event you’d like considered, email all of its details—as well as images, if you’ve got any—to events@torontoist.com.
WORDS: The minds at TINARS may have received some divine inspiration when they invited the improv players of Monkey Toast to act out Jonathan Goldstein’s new tome Ladies and Gentlemen, The Bible! This Is Not a Reading Series Executive Director (and Pages Books & Magazines owner) Marc Glassman will be hosting the show—we’re guessing because this will be one not to miss, and he wanted the best seat in the house. The Rivoli (334 Queen Street West), 8 p.m., $5 (FREE with book purchase).
FAREWELL: TINARS will also be presenting a party in honour of Quill and Quire editor Derek Weiler, who passed away recently. Fellow editor Nathan Whitlock hosts the memoriam, which will include music and much conversation in remembrance of a well-respected member of Toronto’s literary crowd. Gladstone Hotel Ballroom (1214 Queen Street West), 8 p.m., FREE.
MUSIC: The new Sideshow Café has recently opened beside Zero Gravity Circus in the east end. Squirrel-loving Britton Vincent hosts a Wednesday night acoustic jam, open to anyone who shows up with a (non-electric) instrument. Apparently the café serves great espresso, too (according to this Tweet). Sideshow Café (1300 Gerrard Street East), 8–11 p.m., FREE.
MUSIC: Toronto ukulele fans have made the Dominion their home on Wednesday nights for the Corktown Uke Jam. Organized by two members of The McFlies, the jam begins with a workshop of songs from the session’s established jambook, before moving to an open-stage format for the rest of the evening. The Uke Jam has found a home on YouTube as well. The Dominion on Queen (500 Queen Street East), 8–11 p.m., FREE for uke players, $3 for voyeurs.
