Urban Planner: April 22, 2009

Urban Planner is Torontoist’s daily guide to what’s on in Toronto, published every morning. If you have an event you’d like considered, email all of its details—as well as images, if you’ve got any—to events@torontoist.com.

FASHION: It’s night two of Alternative Fashion Week, and the fun just keeps on strutting. Caitlin Cronenberg unveils some beautiful photography, and the Deadly Nightshades debut their new line of sustainable bike-friendly street clothes before heading over to the great Mill Street Pub for sustainable brew (Coffee Porter, anyone? There’s a $5 cover, but it includes a first beer). Music, performances, and more photography add to the experience of the Earth Day “Planet” theme. Distillery District, Fermenting Cellar, and Mill Street Brewery (55 Mill Street), 6 p.m.–1:30 a.m., $25.
P(ART)Y: The Mercer Union takes Bingo to the next step: the third dimension! A 3-D bingo kit available at the door includes a bingo marker, a beer, a lucky charm, and 3-D glasses. We’re not clear on how that extra dimensionality functions, but throw in accompanying music from Top Friends and DJ Songplaya, and maybe it doesn’t matter. Mercer Union Centre for Contemporary Art (1286 Bloor Street West), 7 p.m., $15 (includes Bingo kit) or $5 (party only).
WORDS: Toronto’s queer and trans youth writers present the latest issue of Pink Ink at this week’s regular Granny Boots fiesta. The ‘zine launch is hosted by Pink Ink organizer Karine Silverwoman, and includes music from DJ Elle Nino. Most importantly, the new issue’s young contributors will read from their favourite pieces. Gladstone Hotel (1214 Queen Street West), 7:30 p.m., FREE.
MUSIC: We find it curious that Oklahoma band The All-American Rejects come from the town of Stillwater—the namesake of Billy Crudup and Jason Lee‘s band in Almost Famous. As far as any actual similarity goes, the All-American Rejects’s poppy emo sound makes the kids happy, but leaves critics somewhat half-fulfilled. Maybe they have more in common with the fictional Stillwater than we thought. Phoenix Concert Theatre (410 Sherbourne Street), 9 p.m., $25.50. All Ages.
SHOPPING: When we learned that one of the opening day activities for the new Shops at Don Mills was a children’s forum on “Elephant Thoughts,” we wondered whether it might be a tongue-in-cheek reference to the elephant in the room. There’s been more than a little controversy about the “destructuring” of the classic ’50s mall. Perhaps Heritage Toronto will put some of that to rest with not one but three heritage plaques installed today as part of the ceremonies. Shops at Don Mills (1090 Don Mills Road), 10 a.m., FREE.
