MUSIC: The talented and well-loved Howie Beck plays the Mod Club tonight in support of his latest album, How to Fall Down in Public. Exclaim‘s Chris Whibbs calls the album “expertly crafted pop music that easily captivates” and “damn fine.” Expect the live show to be more of the same unassuming perfection. Dan Griffin opens. Mod Club Theatre (722 College Street), 8 p.m., $12.
ART: Twenty-two artists from the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States have put together an April Fool’s group show, “JK LOL,” that uses humour as a connecting theme. The exhibit’s opening reception is tonight, featuring live music from A Young Wife. Studio Nine Gallery (1400 Queen Street East), 6–9 p.m., FREE.
LECTURE: Former Médicins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) president James Orbinski gives a lecture tonight entitled “Global Health, Politics, and Action: The Humanitarian Dilemna.” Orbinski was the subject of last year’s award-winning documentary Triage about his MSF work in Rwanda, Somalia, and the Congo. The lecture is part of the Tommy Douglas Distinguished Speaker Series at University College. Sidney Smith Hall, room 2110 (100 St. George Street), 7 p.m., $2 (suggested).
ART: The spring-has-sprung edition of the One of A Kind Show opens today and continues until Sunday (April 5). More than four hundred artisans have spent countless hours painting tiny flowers on pieces of rice—or any number of similar painstaking crafty activities—in preparation for the five-day run of the show. Look for more One of a Kind coverage on Torontoist later today. Direct Energy Centre (100 Princes’ Boulevard), 11 a.m.–10 p.m., $12 ($6.50 students and seniors).
SPORTS: Toronto Football Club fans not currently in Ohio have an opportunity to meet the Reds’ midfielder Rohan Ricketts in person when he hosts a pre-opener pub-night launch of his Athletes for Africa campaign. Ricketts will be donating money—based on his goal performance this year—to support the education and training of soccer-playing youth in war-ravaged northern Uganda. Rickett’s Ugandan campaign is his contribution to Steve Nash’s Football for Good initiative for Athletes for Africa. Shoeless Joe’s (1189 King Street West), 6 p.m., FREE.
