FILM: Tonight, join #1 cutest couple ever (Olivia Chow and Jack Layton) at the Bloor Cinema, where they’re hosting the Toronto premiere screening of Academy Award–nominated director Leslie Iwerks‘s latest endeavour. The film, a short documentary called Downstream, follows the controversy surrounding Alberta’s multi-billion dollar oil sands industry. Following the screening, Chow will moderate a panel discussion regarding the environmental and social impact of tar sands, featuring Layton, Iwerks, Academy Award–nominated producer Phil Alberstat, and Greenpeace Climate and Energy Campaign Coordinator Christie Ferguson. Although tonight’s screening is free, you need to RSVP to chowo1c@parl.gc.ca or by calling 416-533-2710 in advance, with your name, phone number, address, and number of tickets requested. WORDS: The Hart House Literary and Library Committee are hosting a party this evening, celebrating the launch of their popular annual publication, the Hart House Review. Tonight’s event will include performances from featured contributors Ronna Bloom and Priscilla Uppal, along with complimentary refreshments(!!!). Additionally, tonight’s event will celebrate the launch of local photographer Davida Nemeroff‘s latest exhibition, Dream Baby Dream. Hart House Debates Room (7 Kings College Circle, on the second floor) 7:30 p.m.–12 a.m., FREE.
MUSIC: Local rock quintet dd/mm/yyyy will play a free in-store performance this evening at Soundscapes. The show comes in anticipation of the group’s upcoming show this Thursday at Lee’s Palace, where they’ll celebrate the release of their new LP, Black Square. They’ll be playing songs off the new album tonight, and you’ll also be able to pick up a ticket for Thursday’s show, in the event that you are a superfan. WORDS: Experimental feminist poet Nicole Brossard will celebrate the premiere of (the English translation of) her new novel Fences in Breathing tonight at the Gladstone Hotel. Brossard will appear in conversation this evening with fellow author and poet Margaret Christakos. Part of Pages’ This Is Not A Reading Series, in association with Coach House Books.
