The Daily Photoist: April 10, 2009

Every weekday morning, bright and early, we feature a photo (or two) from a photographer in the Torontoist Flickr Pool. It’s our way of giving the many excellent photographers in our pool the attention they deserve.

Seeing this just depresses me. To think the glorious old Star building was abandoned and knocked down so they could move into this. It goes without saying but it is one of our greatest loses. So sad.

I particularly remember Stoodleigh’s restaurant in the Star building. It was more of a dining room actually and it was one of the few places to have a liquor licence! It was always packed at lunch hour.
I worked at Lichtman’s on York St. and was able to watch the linotype machines being taken out of the Star building. They were removed from a great gap in the west wall that was created for the move.
The new Star building looked lonesome down there at the foot of Yonge St. with nearly nothing nearby for company. My old office at the foot of Bay St. had been demolished by that time. It was the old Canada Steamship Lines offices and the Harbour Castle Hotel occupies the space today.
I do not miss the long walk with a big mailbag from Bay and Front to the CSL office on a cold January day or any rainy day.
