Next Train Arrival System Arrives

The TTC has officially expanded its Next Train Arrival system—that ticker running at the bottom of the OneStop video screens that tells you when the next subway train will be at the station, first unveiled at Dundas Station in September—to twelve additional stations as of today: Bay, Bloor, Eglinton West, Finch, High Park, Keele, King, Queen, St. Andrew, St. George, Union, and Yonge stations all have ‘em now. According to the TTC’s press release, “additional subway stations will be added throughout the year.” Meanwhile, we will wait patiently for the real big deal: real-time, system-wide, fully functioning GPS, which’ll enable next stop notification for all of the TTC’s vehicles.

    I thought I saw these on the Spadina northbound platform and wondered why they weren’t in use. Am I wrong in thinking that I saw one there?

    These systems have been in place in Europe for over a decade. It’s pretty pathetic that it’s taken this long to get here.

    This is an addition to the platform video screens, displayed at the bottom of the screen, so if the station isn’t equipped, you won’t see anything other than the usual TTC public service messages down there.
    And, frankly, I still believe this is the most useless way to spend money.
    Bunnykin: Why is it pathetic that we just got this ‘feature’? It doesn’t improve the riding experience. We already know the next train is coming in five minutes or less; it is posted on signs. If there is a service disruption it is displayed on the video screen and announced, and in any event if that happened I can’t imagine the screens displaying sensible data. (How does the system know when the next train is coming when Transit Control has directed it to hold in the tunnel until further notice?)

    Because the TTC is simply not that reliable. Far too many times I have been waiting much longer than the said 5 minutes for a train, with no announcement from TTC as to why there is a delay or how long it will be.
