"Toronto feels—and is—safe. Even the pan handlers are surprisingly cheerful." Enticing words for travellers from London that are found in the "Safety" section of a Toronto travel guide published over the weekend by the Telegraph. The British daily, once owned by Conrad Black, picks a giant phallic symbol, a Frank Gehry redesign, the waterfront, a market hop, and the combined lure of a giant crystal, ceramics, and shoes as its top five sights. Top spots for visitors to dine at should spark debates among local foodies: Rodney's Oyster House, Delux, New Sky Restaurant, L’Espresso Bar Mercurio, and the Swan.

Why are these things always so lame? I "love" how they translated Streetcar to tram, dessert to pud and explained that patio = outdoor terrace but left "subway" without translation.
I also can't figure out why these things always send people to Kensington Market without attempting to explain what they will find there. I've been stopped many times by young folks with backpacks and guidebooks standing at the corner of Baldwin and Augusta asking "where is the Kensington Market?", it would be so easy to explain in a few words what it is rather than set the expectation that it's something like St. Lawrence Market which is what the tourists mostly seem to expect.
Well, as for the cheerful panhandlers, I saw one the other day with a sign that said "Will take a verbal abuse for change."
And why did they put a picture of the AGO from the side? Odd.
Since you seem discontent with their recommendations, what would you put on this list instead?
I'm not discontent per se with the recommendations; for sites, I was looking for different ways to say the destinations without saying their names, while for restaurants, anyone's recommended destinations for visitors will stir a healthy debate (the arguments over "best of" choices can be like a western shootout on food boards).
My favourite cheerful Toronto panhandler of all time was a young woman at Yonge and Wellesley who asked if I could spare some change so that she could neuter her pet goldfish.
Haha, a man asked me the same thing last year on 4/20.
