Introducing Newsstand
Starting Monday, Torontoist is bringing newsstands back.
A long time ago in internet time—March-ish 2006—Torontoist starting doing morning news roundups: a link to a relevant news story that someone else had scooped us on, a quick summary of that link, and maybe some commentary or a joke or two. The format was quickly picked up and tweaked by all your other favourite local blogs to suit their needs, and our roundups continued every weekday until the end of summer last year, when we called them off. In spite of our much-increased daily news coverage after that, the roundups’ absence still left something of a hole in Torontoist, so we’re bringing them back, with a new format, and a new name: Newsstand.
Newsstand will be, well, a lot like a newsstand. Every morning, it’ll feature the biggest, best, or most interesting news from other media outlets around the city, discriminately culled from everyone from the big guns (like the Star) to the alt-weeklies (like NOW) to our bloggers-in-arms (like BlogTO). At least for now, we’ll be providing minimal commentary on the stories we include; Newsstand’s goal is to highlight local and relevant news rather than comment too much on it. That’s not to say that we’re averse to commentary, though: as always, we want your thoughts in the comments of the article, and we’ll probably participate there, too—because hey, if everyone gathers there to talk about the news, it’ll be even more like a real live newsstand.
Starting Monday, Newsstand will join the Daily Photoist and Urban Planner as the three core features of Torontoist that’ll all be ready to greet you every weekday by the time the workday begins—and, as always, there’ll still be plenty more great stuff throughout the day after them, news included. Look for your new favourite newsstand right here, on Monday, and every weekday thereafter.
