Yet Another Street View of Google’s Cars

Spotted! Again! One of Google’s Street View cars! This time by reader Dan Gouge, who sent us the shot above, of a car prowling Leslie and Commissioners Streets at 10:30 this morning, which means that Google isn’t resting like we are this holiday Monday. Like the car another reader caught at the start of this month, this one’s a Chevy Cobalt sedan, but it’s not identical: the first car was green and its license place was BFEM 862; this one’s purple and its license plate is BFEM 859. We’re sensing a trend.
Even though Google told the Post that Street View will launch in the “coming weeks,” the cars still being actively out and about probably doesn’t indicate any delay in that: according to the Star, Google already has an ample supply of photos from late 2007 to use, and for the sake of our privacy they’ll be automatically blurring out human faces and…license plates. So, uh, never mind that last paragraph.

    That’s a Chevy Cobalt, not a Ford.

Hah, I just came here to say that. It even has the Chevy logo front (well, back) and centre, earth to Torontoist?

I have corrected this egregious error, the result of my long-standing confusion over Ford/GM car brands

Don’t worry, it won’t be long before we all forget about GM.

There’s some paranoia in Toronto about the Google car (http://www.torontocitylife.com/2009/04/09/doofusspotting/). Personally I think it’s a great way to promote the city.

I don’t really understand the paranoia, either. Google’s not setting up a panopticon or otherwise surveilling an unsuspecting public… they’re stematically photographing the streets every once and a while. Given the face- and plate-blurring, it seems to me that Street View does nothing to undermine whatever limited expectation of privacy a person in a public space might reasonably have.
Plus, Street View is freaking sweet. But that’s neither here nor there.

I find it amusing that they blur out licence plate numbers. Last I looked, licence plate numbers are public information.

We have it in DC and it’s pretty sweet. It was also super useful for when I lived in New York. What’s not to like?
