Urban Planner: March 29, 2009
KIDS: Bunch Family has created a fantastic urban planning playground for kids with their Bunch Family Salon today, putting the little tykes together with some of the city’s leading designers and thinkers. Torontoist will be there too, liveblogging with the kids as they share their ideas of a new Toronto. Salon events such as creating a wind-powered “art park,” going on guerrilla greening missions, and constructing a new city using recycled cardboard hope to inspire the next generation of urban designers. OCAD (100 McCaul Street), 2–5 p.m., $20 (cash only).
PHOTOGRAPHY: Georgette Peters has been photographing the elaborate bicycle bell creations of Toronto cyclists this year. She shares her tiny finds with us in her new “Does This Ring a Bell” exhibit opening at Side Space Gallery today. Clay and Paper Theatre make an appearance at the opening with performances of Bicycle Revolution Cantastoria at 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Side Space Gallery (1080 St. Clair Avenue West), 3–6 p.m., FREE.
ART: Online practical-art store Karamel and the Studio Gallery have teamed up to create “Personal Belongings,” a momentary pop-up store in the gallery’s second floor space. Take home an artist-created item in a piece of the store itself (see Torontoist’s coverage from yesterday). All furniture and display modules in the pop-up store have been created from fleeting pieces of cardboard that serve a dual function as take-home containers. Today is the second of the store’s two-day run. Studio Gallery (294 College Street, second floor), 12–9 p.m., FREE.
MUSIC: The Cadillac Lounge invites you to celebrate the completion of their twenty-six-month renovation now that it’s finally finished. Favourite Cadillac bands Ancient Chinese Secret, The Royal Crowns, and The Frizelles play the grand re-opening. The bar is serving free hors d’oeuvres and handing out lots of giveaways. RSVP to the Cadillac at cadillaclounge@rogers.com for a spot on the guest list. Cadillac Lounge (1296 Queen Street West), 7 p.m. ‘til late, FREE.
