Streeter: Beached Wail Edition

2008_07_30_Streeter.jpgOverheard by Robin Hatch at the Beaches Bake Shop two Sundays ago. A girl in a Baby Phat coat and Apple Bottoms jeans and a guy wearing Sean John and Fubu, both with “seemingly inauthentic Brooklyn accents,” are paying for their coffee.
Barista: That will be $2.79.
Girl: That’s so cheap! Much better than Starbucks.
Barista: Oh, we’re loads better than Starbucks—the food is cheaper and better…
Guy: And there are too many gay people at Starbucks.
Barista: Hmm.
Guy: …And they all hit on me, and I can’t blame them, but like…
Barista: Hmm.
Girl, to Guy: You can’t just SAY that here. It’s not the Danforth, okay?

    Wow.

Why do ignoramuses always think they are irresistibly attractive to gay people? I recently overheard some chubby sports bar-type with an ape drape and a molestache claim that he doesn’t want to work with any “fags” because he doesn’t want to get hit on. Yeah, don’t flatter yourself, chief. The only gay guy that would hit on you would be someone with a white trash homophobe fetish who also had an appreciation for the fine art of beer company apparel.

I don’t know whether to be more offended by him slagging gay men or for her slagging the Danforth.

How long before somebody calls the Human Rights Commission over this? This looks like something the “brown shirts” would love to tackle.

I am confused why it is so surprising to people that most guys would stick their dick in anything, usualy geared towards their sexual interest. I’m sure mr. Fubu has the same standards.

Well done her for saying something though. I wonder if they were a couple or on date? Maybe he was trying (and failing) to impress her with his attractiveness?

Why is it more acceptable to accuse a minority (the Greek) of being homophobic?
so basically she bashed one minority in support of another… isn’t that hypocritical?

Ever been to the Danforth on a Friday note? It’s like a homophobe mecca.

    wow way to generalize.

    1. I’m guessing this is an exaggeration. It is just too silly, people don’t talk like that, even homophobes. Unless, of course, he was making a joke, a politically-incorrect, offensive joke, though it might be.
    2. What is with the fashion descriptors — are we stereotyping here?
    3. As far as I know, the Danforth is quite an open, and easy-living kinda place, not at all homophobic. Beaches, I think might be a bit more uptight, but I wouldn’t like to generalize, since I live there and all. There are homophobes everywhere, even… shudder… downtown.

I find it hard that hard to believe, given all the gay couples living in the neighbourhood. Maybe you mean Danforth Road out in Scarborough?

most guys would stick their dick in anything

That explains the radiator at Fry’s funeral.

I don’t think she was accurate that the Danforth is more homophobic, although there are certainly some subsects of society that are less accepting than others (good luck being gay, out, and living in Barbados, for example).
But if she were right, I’d say there is a difference between supporting heterosexism with a statement like “all the gays want me” and pointing out heterosexism with a statement like “that attitude comes from a heterosexist area, and that’s not here”. So I wouldn’t call it hypocritical.
Also, there’s a difference between discriminating against gays and discriminating against people who live on the Danforth. Just as there’s a difference between saying “black people are stupid” and “blonde people are stupid”. Some things involve a history of power inequities, struggle, systemic injustice and oppression, and that changes the context even if the words sound the same.

and fyi when I say “comes from” I mean “is popular in” not “originates from”
