So Much for a Shoe-In

Say it ain’t so, CBC! Searchlight‘s quest to track down the best live music venue in Canada is now down to its final twenty, and it seems the future is foggy for the Big Smoke. The only remaining contender for Toronto is, of course, the Horsehoe Tavern, with a who’s-played list as great as the Grammys―wait―what?! We just actually checked the list, and it turns out that Radio 3 listeners picked Hugh’s Room, way out by its lonesome at Dundas and Roncesvalles, as the only Toronto venue worthy of being in the nation’s top twenty. It’s not that we have anything against folk and roots music, but seriously, WTF?! When Pete Seeger tops the Wall of Fame for our city’s best venue, it’s time we all take a deep breath, re-evaluate our lives, and get on the next plane to Winnipeg, the crown champion city thus far with three of the nation’s top nominees. Well, at least we’re not the only ones getting swindled: Montreal and Vancouver (including the grand Commodore Ballroom) were cut from the running altogether.

Of course the ‘Shoe should be ahead of Hugh’s Room…but alas, internet voting is nothing more than organized bombardment and vote piling-on.
Winnipeg’s venues are pretty cool. the Albert is a crazy old hole in the wall with a 100 year old wood-and-glass beer fridge and a hotel above it that saw a crazy decapitation and eviceration murder that was strangly linked to a J. Lo. ring that was lost/stolen. can the ‘Shoe claim that?
and Lo Pub is a neat, comfy, new bar that gets a lot of good bands AND has one of the best beer selections you’ll find (Winnipeg’s kick-ass Half Pint beers are sold there).
Times Change is literally a cubby hole in the wall. not sure if it should be on the list, but oh well…

    Call the Office? Seriously?
I lived in London for many years and I will grant you that CTO is a helluva lot better than say, Jim Bob Rays or Jacks. But it’s a bad venue, notwithstanding the great bands that play there (I saw Crystal Castles, Junior Boys, Health, and Cadence Weapon all rock the place). The sound is terrible, it’s always cramped beyond capacity, and you can’t see from many angles because of the pillars that dot the room. I can understand wanting to have London represented in this list, but c’mon. This should be the time when someone in that city notes, “hey, we could really use a new venue in this city for live acts…”

A venue from Toronto won’t win for the simple reason that people will bitch endlessly that the poll was Toronto-centric.
