Page Deep-Sixed

Steven Page is out of the Barenaked Ladies. The band announced late last night on their website that “By mutual agreement, Steven Page will be parting company with the remaining members of Barenaked Ladies….Steven Page will pursue solo projects including theatrical opportunities while the band enters the studio in April 2009, and hits the road in the fall.” And if that announcement wasn’t sad enough, take a second and read the unbelievably depressing Maclean’s cover story about Page from last summer.

What upsetting news…the end of an era.

I guess Steve’s having some trouble laying off the nose candy. Or maybe he’s just decided his ego’s too big for the Ladies to handle. Good luck to him.

I saw them at The Hangar at U of T for $3 in 1989 or 1990. Indeed, the end of an era for Canadian music. hey were a serious novelty act at first, and although I marveled at their musicianship, I wondered at the time if they would last beyond their first album. Consummate live performers!
I doubt any scandal has broken them up. Likely just a decision based on recent struggles and a mutual agreement among friends.
Although I do look forward to see what comes out of BNL sans Page.

Anyone who saw “Don’t Talk Dance” perform during the mid-1990′s can attest that the boys from BNL can do JUST FINE without Mr. Page around to drag them down.
I went to a loft party on Sorauren one night where they were the featured live act. DTD performed, made up of members of BNL, the Bourbon Tabernacle Choir, Kurt Swinghammer, Ani Defranco on bongos, Devon… It was an intense performance, felt like two hours straight and the room was so packed, jumping up and down like idiots to the crazy music being played. The performance ended with a resounding sing along to Neil Young’s “Keep on Rockin’ in the Free World”, complete with a brass section, everyone in the room was just screaming. All this, without Steve Page.
