Jewish Protesters Stage Sit-In at Israeli Consulate

The Israeli consulate at Bloor and Avenue was briefly taken over by a group of women, Jewish protesters, earlier today. The group, which includes writer and activist Judy Rebick and local filmmaker B. H. Yael, was protesting the recent invasion of Gaza, as well as the Canadian government’s failure to condemn that military action. Their stated aim was to “send a clear statement that many Jewish-Canadians do not support Israel′s violence and apartheid policies… [and join] with people of conscience all across the world who are demanding an end to Israeli aggression and justice for the Palestinian people.” Police moved in on the group shortly after their arrival and are now arresting at least some of the protesters.

CORRECTION: JANUARY 7, 2009
The Israeli consulate is located at Bloor and Avenue, not at Bloor and University, as the article originally stated—the latter two streets never meet.

Solidarity Forever! Judy Rebick is my hero!

What a bold action! As a Jewish person who is deeply critical of Israel’s policies and is against the occupation, it was wonderful to read this news. Hopefully this will result in more media attention to the anti-war Jewish groups, and help delegitimize pro-Israel Jewish groups’ claims that they speak for the entire Jewish community.

Wow, Judy Rebick is now my hero too. About effin time some Jews with media clout actually do something.

I concur with the above comments.

a peaceful protest (much better than yelling, screaming and calling for destruction of a state). kudos to them for standing up for what they believe in.
one thing i want to mention: saw a picture of the sit-in. looks like it was a handful of protestors. the group’s quoted aim was to “…send a clear statement that many Jewish-Canadians…” A half dozen protesters doesn’t necessarily represent “many” Jewish Canadians.

A minor correction. The consulate is near
Bloor St. and Avenue Rd. University Ave.
    ends at College St.
I can’t seem to find how to submit a correction
in this new format. Where did it go?

  • David Topping

That’s almost certainly my fault, as I added the bit about the location. One second.
In the future, to submit a correction you can and should e-mail tips@torontoist.com or me, at david@torontoist.com. (For what it’s worth, this was always the best possible way to submit a correction.)

Thanks again for catching that—I just appended a short correction above. I’m tweaking the correction format to fit the new layout, so it may look a little different than it currently does over the next few hours.
