Just off the wire from the TTC—tomorrow afternoon, the organization will announce a "sponsorship for a fare-free New Year’s on the TTC...by Toronto Mayor David Miller and Nick Di Donato of the Liberty Entertainment Group on behalf of the Toronto Entertainment Alliance." A quick glance at the Liberty Group's website takes you to this page, which announces that the newly-formed Alliance, which "consists of members from the hospitality industry, licensed establishments, restaurants, night clubs, owners and operators"—like Molson, The Keg, CiRCA, The Star, NOW, etc. etc.—"has taken the initiative to organize a coalition of leaders in the entertainment industry to raise funds in support of the program." The page suggests that all rides from 12 a.m. to 4 a.m. on January 1 will be covered.

How cheap can you get? Why not have the transit be free from around 6 pm onwards?
That's how it was in the '70s for several years.
That way, people could economically go visiting and partying.
Unfortunately, there were problems with drunks on trains and people falling down stairs in subway stations.
But we're more sensible about alcohol now, aren't we?

Yep, it's official—free from 12:01 a.m. to 4 a.m. on Janaury 1st. TTC's expecting 100,000 people to take the system, and it cost the Alliance $90,000 to finance it.
I wonder if they factored vomit cleanup into that number.
