Urban Planner: November 10, 2008

MEETING: The Toronto Public Space Committee holds its general meeting tonight to share information about the status of current campaigns for improving public spaces in Toronto. There will be cookies and treats served at the meeting. The second part of the evening moves the session to the local pub for an informal brainstorming social. MUSIC: Eugene Chadbourne, unconventional guitarist and influential noisemaker, is in town for two performances this week. He will be playing with a full band at Somewhere There tomorrow night. Tonight he serves up a more intimate solo performance at the Tranzac. Tranzac Main Hall (292 Brunswick Avenue), 8:30 p.m., $10.

MUSIC: Country Singer Larry Pierce, writer/performer of such classics as “I Like to Fuck” and “Good Enough to Eat,” was ripe for the documentary treatment. He’s the subject of Dirty Country, playing at the Bloor Cinema tonight. The film fingers other raunchy musicians in the process, including original dirty rapper Blowfly. The special treat at tonight’s screening is a live performance from Larry Pierce himself. Bloor Cinema (506 Bloor Street West), 9:30 p.m., $9.

FILM: The death of thirteen-year-old Sabrina Shannon from anaphylactic shock eventually resulted in Ontario passing Sabrina’s Law to protect children with deadly allergies. NFB Mediatheque is screening Sabrina’s Law, a documentary about Sabrina’s story and her parents’ journey to make sure other children did not suffer the same fate. The screening is followed by conversation with specialists and advocates. NFB Cinema (150 John Street), 7:30 p.m., $6.

FILM: Torontoist readers should be familiar by now with Toronto’s latest stint as cinematic Boston. The filmmakers of Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day have issued an extras casting call for a scene they are shooting this afternoon. Potential background performers should arrive at the shooting location precisely at call time and ask for “Seelick.” Metropolitan United Church (56 Queen Street East), 2 p.m., FREE.
