Hold Me Closer, Giant Dancer

We don’t talk about video games that often here on Torontoist, usually for lack of a local angle, but we’ve found one to give us a reason to talk about TIGSource’s Bootleg Demakes competition. It’s a contest to produce a recent video game design as if it was developed for far older machines, and local independent game developer (and one of the organizers of TOJam) Jim McGinley developed Hold Me Closer, Giant Dancer, a PC “demake” of PS2 title Shadow of the Colossus if it was for the TRS-80 Model III. It’s a clever little take on one of our favourite games, so why not check it out? (You can view some footage of it on YouTube, too.)

Mmmm, retro-gaming goodness. You know what games I miss? Those old 1990 2D rotoscopic character games. Cell shaded 3D modeling is more prefered these days for a “graphical” look, but there is a real lack of connection you had with controling the character like in Flashback, and Blackthorne(Prince of Persia with a shotgun).

I’m old enough to remember code wheels and write-protect stickers. I even had a cassette drive. Dastardly kids today and their new-fangled machine computers. Back in the day, our triangle spaceship shot at asteroid outlines and we liked it because of the realism! And four-colour displays were good enough for everybody! Pssh!

If you haven’t played You Have To Burn the Rope, then Advanced Set The Rope On Fire won’t be as funny or make sense.
(Burn is worth playing if for no other reason than the awesome song in the end credits.)

How about just a regular retro-arcade-style game?
I should probably shorten the first couple of levels as they’re too easy and drag on a bit. But it gets pretty tough soon after that.
