Where’s Jack?

no-jack-sm2.jpg
It’s been a week and a half since the federal election was called and just five days remain before candidate nominations close. The races in most ridings are shaping up, but so far it looks like no candidates in Toronto–Danforth (including NDP leader Jack Layton) have managed to scrape together the 100 signatures required to submit their nomination papers. Who will be the first? It could be you.
Update: The Green Party’s Sharon Howarth just became the first to crack the list. The rest of you were a little too slow on the draw.

My co-worker had two young Conservatives come to his door last night begging for signatures because they actually don’t have 100 local people who have endorsed their candidate in T-D. The co-worker declined to sign the papers out of pitty; no human being in good conscience could let another run for the Conservatives in T-D. That’s a suicide mission.
But I think Layton would have to have had his nomination papers filed already since he has lots of signs up (and I believe you have to be a nominated candidate to put up signs).

You gota think of the burocratic machine though! Them thar rubber stamps don’t ink themselves!

I’ve written about the plight of east-end Conservative candidates in the past. The Beaches–East York candidate in the 2004 election responded, saying that, “It was a dispiriting campaign.” Understatement of the year, I think.

it would so bloody funny if my MP was so busy swanning around being a national Leader (not a national party leader, it’s almost impossible to find “ndp” on some of his posters but you can’t miss his name) that he didn’t get his paperwork sorted. Not to worry, I’m sure Olivia would take over and find him some minor role in her regime.
Not only is running for the tories a suicide mission, so is the libs. Toronto-Danforth is gentrifying but not quickly enough for him to make much headway.

I hear the Liberal in T-D is the son of a well-connected grit who, if he does respectably in this election, will be given a winnable riding one day.
Val, your linked exchange with that Conservative candidate actually made me feel an ounce of compassion for him. I think it was the double whammy of having a single volunteer with no resources and not being able to string together a proper sentence.

Elections Canada might just be slow in updating their website. They didn’t have the contact info for the returning officer in my riding until mid-last week, and the phone number still didn’t work.

I think the actual elections should work this way. First to get 100 votes, wins. Speed voting.

Deadline for candidate filing is Sept. 21.
Layton still has time to file.

Given the recent flap about Gerry Ritz, will he get the push and a last minute person come in?

Why are the Cons even trying in Trinity-Spadina? Olivia Chow’s not going to lose her seat, definitely not to a white Con.

  • Green Sulfur

To add to Rek’s comment: …Or the completely unknown wife of an underwhelming former MP.

I think people are a little sick of politics. It’s the same leaders with the same old policies!
