Vintage Toronto Ads: From Acorns to Meat

After 90 years of serving customers in Toronto, the Dominion banner begins its vanishing act this week as owner Metro undertakes a year-long process of renaming the Ontario grocery stores acquired in its purchase of A&P Canada. Recent renovations at several stores around the city will culminate with the official launch of the Metro banner at the Bayview-Eglinton location on Thursday.
Before the brand becomes as historic as the high-collared gentleman carving the roast, we present several samples of Dominion advertising, including its longtime “Mainly Because of the Meat” slogan.

I grew up shopping at Dominion, so I’ll be sad to see the brand gone. As for Metro, they haven’t started off on the right foot – what were they thinking of, leaving the stores open during renovations? You can’t find half the products you’re looking for and staff are moving whole shelves full of product right in front of you. Probably would have been completed in half the time as well.
    If only you could find a Loblaw’s in a pedestrian-friendly location…

Toronno — Bathurst & St. Clair’s Loblaw’s is pretty pedestrian friendly – I’ve shopped there for years, as it is the easiest store for me to access without a vehicle. Though I live at Bathurst & St. Clair now, I shopped there even when I was living near Wilson Station.

Thanks for reminding me. It’s been a while since I’ve visited that neighbourhood. I’m tired of having to negotiate the Gardiner to reach the Queen’s Quay Loblaws.
