Urban Planner: September 28, 2008

WORDS: Torontonian artist Steve Driscoll is launching his new book, Steve Driscoll: Conversations, this afternoon at David Mirvish Books. The book showcases the changes and developments in Driscoll’s paintings over the last eight years, and the launch will also include an exhibition of the work presented in Driscoll’s book. David Mirvish Books (596 Markham Street), 2 p.m., FREE.
FUN: Improv Everywhere is hosting the MP3 Experiment in Toronto today. At 2 p.m. in Riverdale Park, participants will gather wearing either red, blue, yellow, or green t-shirts, and listen to the same song at the same time in the same place (if you’re interested in participating, there’s a more comprehensive list of instructions on the Improv Everywhere site). It might not be as exciting as Improv Everywhere’s previous stunts down south, which include Frozen Grand Central Station and Food Court Musical, but it should be pretty cool regardless. Participants are encouraged to leave their cameras at home for the sake of the event’s “spontaneity.” Riverdale Park East (Broadview Avenue at Montcrest Avenue), 2 p.m., FREE.
FESTIVAL: Today marks Kensington Market’s second last Pedestrian Sunday of the year. This month’s theme is “Earth: Global Harvest Traditions,” and will feature a feast of locally-harvested food. On top of the usual car-free festivities, there will also be a debate at 3 p.m. featuring the candidates for the federal parliament seat in the Trinity-Spadina riding, hosted by Michael Louis Johnson, that will take place on Augusta Avenue between Nassau Street and Oxford Street. Kensington Market (Augusta Avenue, south of College Street), 1–10 p.m., FREE.
TRANSIT: A sad reminder that today is the last day adult tickets will be accepted as TTC fare. Don’t worry: you still have until October 31 to exchange your tickets for tokens, at either the South Collector Booth of the Bloor-Yonge Subway Station (from Monday to Friday between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.), or the MDP Office located next to Davisville Station (from Monday to Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m.).
WORDS: As you surely know, the Word On The Street Book and Magazine Festival returns today to Queen’s Park. Check out Torontoist’s full preview. Queen’s Park, 11 a.m.–6 p.m., FREE.
Pages from Steve Driscoll: Conversations from the author’s website.

CORRECTION: SEPTEMBER 28, 2008
Today’s Pedestrian Sunday debate was between candidates for the federal parliament—not city council—seat for Trinity-Spadina. Our mistake.

It’s bullshit that I’m stuck with 4 TTC tickets in my wallet. Why should I travel all the way to Yonge and Bloor to exchange something that was sold to me yet they’re the ones who changed the terms of the deal?
Tokens don’t fit as neatly into my wallet either, now I have another pesky annoyance.

  • Robin Hatch

As much as I sympathize with you (tickets have their own little section in my wallet, tokens get lost in my purse), I get that the TTC will be saving millions of dollars from the folks who scan & print off their own tickets.
Now I just want a more aesthetically pleasing token that matches the pretty rainbowy tickets.

Just appended a correction above about the participants in the debate (parliament v. council). Better late than never; hope no-one showed up expecting the wrong set of candidates.

  • Jonathan Goldsbie

Even people showing up expecting the right set of candidates were disappointed. The Conservative, Christine McGirr, didn’t appear. I really, really wanted to ask her about the statement “A Stand Against a Tax on Living” that appeared in the flyer dropped off at my house this week.
