Gloria's suggestion makes me think of all the vans, trucks & SUVs on the road. Having trouble seeing over the person in front of you? No problem, get a bigger car. It's a bad solution that only gets worse as more and more people deal with the situation and making it worse for everyone around them until they buy into it too. It's probably not that great of an analogy, but it's my random thought of the day.
But clearly, I didn't word my comment carefully, since Gaulder's gone ahead and become crotchety too.
By "good" headphones/earphones, I mean quality equipment that doesn't require you to crank it up to 11 in order to hear music on a street or even a subway train.
By "loudest tunes," I meant volume to block out conversation from your OWN ears (and, as a by-product, volume to rock out to and have some fun in a situation where there is usually just annoyance) ... NOT something to engage in an obnoxious loud-off with that chatty talker.
It’s fine, I misspell all of my aliases on occasion... Damn dyslexia (that stupid letter location swapping). I'm just going off on one of my rants anyways so feel free to take them with a grain of salt. Now I wish I brought my mp3 player to work today, arg!
I'm sorry...because YOU need to call people and talk at significantly disturbing volume about your social life, I need to purchase a portable playback device and headphones sufficient to block noise, when I take the TTC? How about a nice cup of STFU?!! Literally - loud obnoxious cell phone conversation holders need to shut up. There is enough noise on the TTC as it is.
@13: If you're referring specifically to me (probably), look up the word "suggestion." My original take, which seems to be some kind of comment-spawning monster, doesn't mean loud talkers are justified, or that people can only deal with them in the way I suggested. That's your inference.
I don't having to confront strangers, since I don't want to deal with it if it backfires, so I like having music as a more passive alternative.
Out of curiosity, I'd be interested in hearing who has actually confronted chatters, and whether it helped.
Ok, I guess by this point, I sort of appointed myself Punching Bag by proxy. I hope you appreciate this, people who violate other people's public personal space with noise!
@16: I think we all are being defensive and ranty about this issue. Just like in the comic we sit through the "noise" waiting for it to stop, but that's as much as we do. As much as I want to play my MP3 player to drown out the noise, I like being aware of my surroundings.
An obnoxious dumpy old guy was on my bus tonight, loudly talking on the phone about his sex life. Reminds me of that girl in high school who always pretended to talk on her cell phone... I saw it once, and it wasn't even on!
1. Invest in a good pair of headphones and a mp3 player.
2. Load your loudest tunes.
3. Press "play."
4. Enjoy.
Don't listen to music loudly on the subway please. (e.g. loudest tunes)
It is more annoying than cellphone chatter. Keep it down.
I can't stand the kids with those mp3 speakers (not headphones) and play their shitty hip hop for everyone to hear on the subway.
too bad she doesn't have an 3G iphone
@2, 3: It's fine if you have good, quiet headphones or earphones. Ornery, much?
@3: Ah, I misread your comment. You are no longer deemed ornery.

Oh man. That's easily #5 or 6 on my list of top 50 pet peeves. And yes I have a lot of pet peeves, and yes I'm ornery.
/Get off my lawn.
Sorry for orneriness. If I can't hear your music, it's I don't care how loud it is for you. Enjoy!
Nice comic this week by the way. I like how your comics always inspire discussion. Awesome!
@9: Yeah, thanks!

I guess ... apologies?
@10: Misspelled "Gauldar."

Next?
i'm just being contrary, gloria.
@15: And I'm just being ... defensive and ranty. Sorry, Andrew. Maybe I need to put on my earphones (quietly) ...

Gaulder - That's an example of "progress trap" or "commitment bias" IIRC.
My whole life is a "progress trap".
Gloria: you know that quietly is better for your ears anyways.
