Yonge & Dundas Scrambling Tomorrow

Toronto Police have just announced [PDF] that the Yonge-Dundas scramble lights, which stop vehicular traffic in all four directions at the intersection simultaneously to allow pedestrians to cross in whatever direction they want, are going into effect as of 11 a.m. Thursday morning. The city, which also briefly experimented with a scramble intersection (also know as the Barnes Dance) in the 1950s, has not-so-elegantly re-anointed it “the Pedestrian Priority Phase.”

As of this morning the lines are in place north-to-south and east-to-west, the diagonals have been started. I’m excited to see this in action.

    Yeah, I love the idea.

Let’s start a pool on how long it’ll take for the first absent-minded motorist, texting away on her cell phone or trying to pass a taxi, to plough into the scrambling pedestrians.

I’d say the 1st accident will be at 11:04 am from a suit franticly trying to make their way to a 11:15 am meeting. But, the 5 police hanging around on bicycles should resolve the issue.
