Populist Pops Off

We publish a lot of articles on Torontoist, and sometimes it’s hard to keep up. Populist is a weekly recap, formerly appearing every Sunday night, that featured some of the coolest, most interesting, most commented, and most recommended posts from the previous week.

After a brief flirtation with a new style for Populist, we’re retiring it altogether—perhaps temporarily (like Cher!), perhaps permanently. If you still want to see only the most popular posts on Torontoist, no worries: there’s always Favourites, which lets you see the most commented-on and most recommended post in the past, week, month, year, or of all-time. From the drop-down menu that says “Change View” on the top of Torontoist’s home page, you can also choose to view the front page of the site in Favorites view, which sorts that day’s posts from most to least popular. Or, if you’re partial to RSS, you can subscribe to our weekly and monthly favourites feeds, both of which only show the most popular posts in the selected time frame.
We’ll almost certainly bring back Populist at the end of the year to feature the most popular posts of the past year, as we did last year. Until the snow’s back, though, Populist likely won’t be.

I never really saw the point of the column. The most commented/recommended covers similar territory, and if you’re a regular reader you didn’t miss any of the stories anyway. It might have been useful for infrequent visitors, but then they have to visit the site when Populist is on top.

The hope was that infrequent readers would know where and when to find it if they wanted (and it was also posted to our Facebook page). But in the end, the work put into it didn’t justify the usefulness on the site.
