Morgentaler Honored, Joseph Bought Back, Fur Trade Forgotten

Dr. Henry Morgentaler, renowned doctor and abortion rights activist, is now a Member of the Order of Canada. Morgentaler spent two decades in and out of court fighting to give women the right to choose, and finally won R. v. Morgentaler in 1988, a decision that made abortion legal across Canada. Morgentaler's appointment to the Order was immediately met with vitriol after it was announced on Tuesday by noted female, Governor General Michaëlle Jean. Those pro-lifers really don't like it when women are allowed to choose things!

The city's garbage levy for apartment and condo residents started yesterday, and will start for homeowners on November 1. To avoid any fees for disposal, Torontoist recommends hoarding all your garbage and burning it in the privacy of your own home, thank you very much.

Curtis Joseph is back on the Leafs! This is very big and exciting news for 2004, and is sure to mildly miff Felix Potvin.

A man died and a woman is in critical condition after each took a "natural" alternative for the drug Ecstasy at the Guvernment. Fortunately, there is another far safer, less expensive natural alternative for Ecstasy: actual ecstasy.

According to an Ipsos-Reid survey, Canadians know more about American history than Canadian history. This is the most embarrassing thing to happen to our country since....that...thing....

CORRECTION: JULY 2, 2008

This article originally said that a death and injury from an Ecstasy-like drug took place in Markham. Both took place at the Guvernment; a previous death, the cause of which is not yet known, occurred at a club in Markham a few days before. Torontoist apologizes for the error.

I've just appended a correction to the post; I misread the CityNews story about the nightclub death and injury. They took place at the Guvernment, which is very much not in Markham.

One thing that bugs me about living in a condo is the lack of a green bin. I cook a lot, so most of my garbage ends up being things that could go into organics as opposed to the trash. Maybe they should work towards that before fining us for having no other option?

My green bin was taken/stolen from the curb back in March, so now all organics end up in the garbage. : /

rek: You can store it in a plastic bag (biodegradable) or another container.

or better yet, don't be so cheap and go buy a new one. It's people like you that completely ruin it.

Your extra garbage (garbage that's not actually garbage), compounded by everyone else's extra garbage is one of the reasons they have to charge for garbage removal and one of the reasons why we have no more space for garbage.

torontothegreat: We shouldn't be burying our garbage. After diverting the organics and recyclables, we should be incinerating it. But people would rather bury it a landfill west of London. What a waste of space and energy.

rek: You can also get a new one for free if you have any bits left of it, I presume. Home Hardwares also stock them for pretty cheap.

>We shouldn't be burying our garbage.

Agreed, my point was however that Rek shouldn't be burying his organics in his garbage.

The point you bring up is a WHOLE other can of worms ;)

My greenbin was stolen last summer. I bought a new one at Home Depot.

It was a problem easily solved.

I put out less than one green garbage bag's worth a month, so I can really see how I'm ruining it for everyone. Even with organics going in the dirt, I divert more than 70% of my waste from landfills already.

Those pro-lifers really don't like it when women are allowed to choose things

Cases of rape excluded, women have the right to choose when they spread their legs.

14 year old girls are notorious for making informed decisions about sex.

rek: Please note that I said that "...women have the right to choose when they spread their legs", whereas your example focused upon girls. Since girls are not women your statement is largely irrelevant. If a 14 year old can even get pregnant without having a miscarriage then it seems obvious to me that abortion is a viable response. Being so young, that choice to have sex was ill informed and they ought not to have to shoulder the adult-like responsibility it entails.

Those pro-lifers really don't like it when women are allowed to choose things!

Things? What kind of things are we talking about?

>I put out less than one green garbage bag's worth a month, so I can really see how I'm ruining it for everyone. Even with organics going in the dirt, I divert more than 70% of my waste from landfills already.

I only dump a quarter of a bucket of oil down the sewer each month, doesn't really hurt anyone.

Organic waste is not motor oil or spent plutonium or used syringes or excised tumours or leaking batteries, so don't be ridiculous.

My 'extra garbage' still puts me on par with the city's 2010 diversion goals, so you really don't have a leg to stand on in this argument TTG. Would it be better (and would I prefer it) if my organics went in a green bin? Yes. Am I 'completely ruin[ing] it'? Demonstratably not.

It's not a big deal if something compostable makes it to a landfill. So what if the rats find healthy nutrients?
Hardly the same as dumping oil down the sewer which poisons the water and fish.

Complaining about hyperbole? Oh the irony!

Hey, my '69 Chevelle still puts me on par with emmission standards, so I'm really not hurting anyone by driving it :P

Maybe if your entire life didn't seem to be made up of sitting on this blog all day/night you might find the time and money to go down to home depot and buy yourself a new greenbin.
