Drunk Spelling Bee

20080708whippersnapper_spellingbee.jpg

This one is pretty self-explanatory. With the tagline “fuck bands, let’s spell,” Whippersnapper is holding Toronto’s first “Adult” Spelling Bee this Thursday, with all door proceeds (plus half the cash bar) going toward Parkdale Project Read.

So if you're into contributing to a good cause by watching red-faced ego-crushery with a drink in hand, get involved. With over a dozen challengers, 250 words you probably won't find in your Merriam-Webster's (including lots of Toronto-centric stuff), and the promise of a cruel and hostile audience, it's basically your perfect geeky Thursday night.

The event, co-organized by Josh Goodbaum and Jenna Mackay, will also feature “celebrity” judges, DJs (Tighten Up and Male Gayze), dancing, and prizes from all the cool-guy sponsors (Spacing, This Ain’t the Rosedale Library, Queen Video, Pages, etc.). It all goes down Thursday at the Whippersnapper Gallery. Doors at 9 p.m., spelling battles at 10. $5! Cheap!

Half the page is in italics, it seems as if someone forgot to close a tag or something.

yipes. way to catch that in the 1.5 minutes my idiocy reigned for. i think you win the superfan award. thanks for looking out!

Why did you change the picture?

I did that (with Ashley's permission)! The original photo was just a small shot of a random spelling bee and I'm not sure if we had permission to use it; this one's more Toronto-y, is a nicer-looking photograph, is bigger, and is, I think, infinitely more appropriate. It was also changed only about twenty minutes after the post went live, in an attempt to minimize commenter trauma.

Haha, thanks. Except it's not a random spelling bee, it's a picture from the musical:
The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
.

The guy in this picture is a big emo. I don't know what picture you had before, but it must've been better than this.

Pssst... it's Merriam-Webster :)

ha. i was really hoping i'd manage to spell something wrong in this post too. i couldn't be happier that it was the name of a dictionary. this is fun, who's got next?
