Rogers Finds Way to Suck the Awesome Out

Rogers has unveiled its iPhone 3G plans, and, as anticipated, they’re really not that great. No unlimited data plan, mandatory three-year contract, no pie, and the best plan—2 GB data allowance with 800 minutes of talk time and unlimited evenings and weekends—will cost ya a cool $115 a month, not including those nice extra charges Rogers always slaps on. They’ve got to be fucking kidding… The CRTC needs to step in and help Canadians who are getting kicked in the face with these awful mobile data plans.

  • Miles Storey

That’s so utterly pathetic. This country needs more competition or at least an effective overseer. Rogers is a joke.

  • xtremesniper

    Fuck. That.
$60 is the maximum that I would pay for an iPhone plan, and the one that’s included for that price is pretty shoddy. On top of that, $60 is actually $75 in Rogers-speak. The CRTC is in bed with Rogers, didn’t you know?

    iHATE ROGERS!

  • Marc Lostracco

    Absurd and atrocious.
    Canada: $115 for 2 GB.
United States: $30 for unlimited data.
Fuck that shit. That $115 top-tier data plan is $4,140 over the length of the 3-year contract lock-in.
I like how they say 400 MB is 3,100 web pages or 1,360 photo attachments. In 1998, maybe.
Just when Rogers has the opportunity to have some good will directed their way by revising their idiotic data plans, they just go and perpetuate exorbitant data rates again.

  • Marc Lostracco

I also wanna point out that “unlimited evenings” start at 9 p.m. (WTF?!) and with Apple launching the App Store at the same time for the iPhone, data usage should be significantly higher than for the first gen iPhone.
And from Roger’s official rate page, am I to surmise that if you want Call Display, you have to cough up for the $15 monthly “Value” Pack? And what’s the deal with the System Access Fee and 911 fee? It’s conspicuously missing from the rate breakdown.

  • David Topping

I can’t believe that Rogers’ “evenings” start at 9 p.m. (The plan I have now starts them at 6 p.m.) 9 p.m. is not just annoying and anti-intuitive, but most of the year it’s outright wrong. By definition, evenings start when the sun sets. Come winter, I fully intend to not pay Rogers for the calls I make after 6 p.m. on their “Unlimited Evening” plan. (Any lawyers interested in providing some OED-based defense for me?)
Rogers really needs to stop finding new ways to fuck over their customers. They’re making a good amount of money now, I’m sure, but the moment a legitimate competitor comes along I don’t think many people will have much of a problem with leaving Rogers for dead. I have been with them for eight years for internet and six for cell service, and I have absolutely no respect for or loyalty to them.

  • PickleToes

Derek: If the CRTC became more intrusive you could expect that figure to be even higher still. Rogers can only charge that much because there’s no competition. The CRTC should step out, the market should be deregulated, and we should reap the benefits of capitalism instead of these arbitrarily high prices.

  • Miles Storey

The thing that makes this even more ridiculous is that Apple is sure to have put pressure on Rogers to provide decent value plans. I know they won’t have as much leverage as they would have in other countries with rival companies vying for the iphone contract but if these are the prices Rogers came up with in conjunction with Apple imagine what they would have wanted to charge.

  • panko

Marc, I think the US price is for data plan on top of a voice plan, so it’s $30 plus whatever your “qualified” voice plan would cost…makes it a bit more expensive than you show it to be (but still better than Canadian pricing, actually)

  • Serpiginous

Well, I was going to buy out my current cell contract and switch to Rogers.
After witnessing this travesty, however, I think I’ll stay with Telus, and cancel my Rogers cable instead.

  • leonwestbrook

    Rogers makes AT&T look GOOD.
And that’s hard to even do.

  • james a

Sucks that the plan is balls compared to AT&T, but on the bright side.. It’s roughly equal to what they are getting in France.
Somebody leaked some fairly similar Australia rates as well, although they are rumoured to be fake..

  • rek

I’ll never be a Rogers customer again. Virgin for phone and TekSavvy for ‘net.

    here’s an outlet:

it’s an online petition to Rogers regarding iPhone pricing

    BOYCOTT ROGERS.
    Isn’t it about time?
