Burlesque Pride Done Proud

2008_06_24_Burlesque_2.jpg
The Saucy Tarts starting off the night.
Last night, 75 people turned up for the Burlesque Pride show held at Goodhandy’s, presented by Skin Tight Outta Sight and the Saucy Tarts. Over three hours, attendees were treated to French-flavoured performances by the Saucy Tarts, a glittering and tattooed Marilyn Monroe, and a surreal R-rated rendition of the Lonely Goatherd—think Broke-baa Mountain.
The night was hosted by Keith Cole, who kept the night moving with his more-is-more routine harrassing boys in the crowd to buy him drinks, asking author Josey Vogels her favourite dildo (“the Rosebud,” she replied), and spiking the night with a sense of spontaneity. His best anecdote was an awkward interview that he had with the CBC as part of its Pride coverage, where the interviewer ended the conversation by asking Cole if he was worried about getting AIDS. He quickly asked her back: “Are you worried about breast cancer?”
Cole made an uncomfortable interviewer himself when he kept performer kat.ass.trophy onstage, when clearly she wanted to make a run for it. Cole was wowed by her routine set to Björk and (lovingly) restrained her while noting her beauty and fabulousness over and over again. The squirm-inducing moment did produce an interesting fact: kat.ass.trophy noted that her costume was completely made of recycled materials, created during the Mr. Goodhandy’s Go Green event in April that benefited charity Greenest City.
For fans of burlesque, the night was but a preview for the Toronto Burlesque Festival, the first of its kind in Toronto, on July 11, 12, and 13. In addition to local talent, the Festival will bring performers from Chicago, New York, and Hollywood. Expect a glitter and pastie shortage in the city around that time period.

Monday night was a wonderful show at a great venue to kick off Pride week! Todd and Mandy, through Goodhandy’s, have done some wonderful work to support so many communities. It’s been a great experience for me to have spent the last two years watching, photographing, and occasionally performing in these sorts of shows on that great stage. On Monday night, all the performers were wonderful, and The Saucy Tarts and kat.ass.trophy are veterans to the Goodhandy’s stage. For anyone who missed Monday, there’s the long-standing drag king and burlesque revue “Degenderit” happening Friday evening at Goodhandy’s as well–another terrific lineup.
If you liked the performers on Monday, be sure to hunt them all down in the Pride guide. The well-known Goodhandy’s performers are all over the Pride stages this year! The Tarts are performing on Saturday night and on Sunday a couple of them will be atop the Goodhandy’s float along with Rani Rhinestone to represent the burlesque component of the Goodhandy’s community–in the honoured spot as last float of the parade. And you can catch Rani and the Cinnamon Hearts on several stages, including their own show at 9pm Sunday on the Church/Wellesley stage, the same one that the Tarts will be gracing on Saturday.
I celebrate any mention of Goodhandy’s and these outstanding performers that I know so well… They’ll be tickled when I let them know!
    Cheers,
    Sammy.
