Burlesque Pride Done Proud

The Saucy Tarts starting off the night.
Last night, 75 people turned up for the Burlesque Pride show held at Goodhandy’s, presented by Skin Tight Outta Sight and the Saucy Tarts. Over three hours, attendees were treated to French-flavoured performances by the Saucy Tarts, a glittering and tattooed Marilyn Monroe, and a surreal R-rated rendition of the Lonely Goatherd—think Broke-baa Mountain.
The night was hosted by Keith Cole, who kept the night moving with his more-is-more routine harrassing boys in the crowd to buy him drinks, asking author Josey Vogels her favourite dildo (“the Rosebud,” she replied), and spiking the night with a sense of spontaneity. His best anecdote was an awkward interview that he had with the CBC as part of its Pride coverage, where the interviewer ended the conversation by asking Cole if he was worried about getting AIDS. He quickly asked her back: “Are you worried about breast cancer?”
Cole made an uncomfortable interviewer himself when he kept performer kat.ass.trophy onstage, when clearly she wanted to make a run for it. Cole was wowed by her routine set to Björk and (lovingly) restrained her while noting her beauty and fabulousness over and over again. The squirm-inducing moment did produce an interesting fact: kat.ass.trophy noted that her costume was completely made of recycled materials, created during the Mr. Goodhandy’s Go Green event in April that benefited charity Greenest City.
For fans of burlesque, the night was but a preview for the Toronto Burlesque Festival, the first of its kind in Toronto, on July 11, 12, and 13. In addition to local talent, the Festival will bring performers from Chicago, New York, and Hollywood. Expect a glitter and pastie shortage in the city around that time period.
