Berkeley Church Condo Nixed

20080619ChurchCondo.jpg
According to the National Post, the Berkeley Playing Fields—the high-rise condo development that Torontoist reported on recently—is not going to happen.
The report states that the $100 million project wasn’t feasible for a number of reasons, mainly that the new building would reach over the church, which is a historic building. There were also some issues with overhang above the sidewalk. The Post article implies that the City believes that any sort of new-fangled condo high-rise wouldn’t do in the historic district of Yorktown. We think the area is incredibly dilapidated and could use this little bit of modernization, but ultimately it’s your call, City of Toronto.
Doug Wheler, the 70-year-old owner of the Berkeley Events Church, doesn’t seem fazed, telling the Post that he is willing and ready to make changes to get his dream project off the ground. Good on you, Doug! Some of us were really excited about your project, and we’re optimistic that you will be able to find something that appeases both the City and high-priced condo buyers.

There are plenty of new highrises going in within just a few blocks of that location. And while there are certainly some issues, it’s hardly “incredibly dilapidated” compared with tons of other neighbourhoods in transition around town.

Isn’t there a garden/patio thing next to the Berkley now? I’d hate to see it dug up for yet another glass rectangle — the Playing Fields or any other.
