American singer-songwriter Aimee Mann will be making an appearance in Toronto this week. She’s about to embark on a tour in support of her new album, @#%&*! Smilers (out June 3), which will see her back in Toronto for a concert on August 28, but you can catch a sneak preview instore at Sonic Boom (512 Bloor Street West) this Friday, May 9 at 6:30 p.m.
Mann is possibly best known for her musical contribution to the movie Magnolia (which in turn is best known for featuring Tom Cruise yelling “Respect the cock!”). Since then, she’s founded her own record company, SuperEgo Records; released three more albums; and appeared on the movie soundtrack to Arctic Tale.
You can read what Mann had to say about the new album in her interview with DCist earlier in the year. “Freeway,” one of the new tracks, is available to listen to on her MySpace page.

My second year illustration prof at ocad, Gary Taxali mentioned that he was working on the album art for this album in the fall, so I can’t wait for it to come out!

You betcha. I’m kind of interested on how the CD jacket will be composed. I find those vector screws a bit tacky, but maybe they’re actually real in the tangible version.

Aimee Mann was adorable back in the early 1980s when she was vocalist for New Wave band ‘Til Tuesday, and she’s still adorable. If Dave Ghrol says she still gives hime a woodie, that’s good enough for me.

let’s not forget she gave up her toe to convince The Dude that Bunny Lebowski had really been kidnapped and that “her life is in your hands”.

Actually, the “Deluxe Edition” of the album will have actual screws!
“Smilers” available in two formats, the deluxe edition features a book-bound cover, a die-cut 32 page book and steel screw binding, only 10k pressed.
