Reading for Fun

Going to see a staged reading is pretty much the theatrical equivalent of watching a live jam band, only in this case the target audience is not inhalant abusers. It’s like a play, but with no movement and featuring an additional character—Mr. or Mrs. Reads The Stage Directions.
The HOTscrawlsfestival is a showcase of this often overlooked art form, which puts a focus on the writer and the actors, throwing away such frivolities as sets and directors. Producing the festival is TheatreKairos, a relative newcomer to the myriad of Toronto theatre companies. The festival is the culmination of an eight-month workshop known as the Writer’s Circle that takes place from October to March. Six emerging writers collectively worked on their pieces, the result of which are the 14-minute presentations showcased on Wednesday.
And honestly, who doesn’t like being read to by professional actors?
The festival takes place Wednesday, May 7, 8 p.m. at the Gladstone Hotel (1214 Queen Street West). Tickets are $12 at the door.
