The committee charged with reviewing Ontario's payday loans law recommends a hard usury cap of sixty percent. Were it any lower, payday loan companies would have to shut down and go get real jobs and make their mothers proud of them. Were it any higher, payday loan companies would be dancing in the streets and shouting "hooray!" So sixty percent is apparently the fair number.
A judge will decide today whether a videotaped interview of Paul Bernardo should be released to the media. Robert Baltovich's lawyers want the tape released to create greater sympathy for their client, who was released from prison last month when he was found not guilty of his girlfriend's murder. The media wants the tape released because Paul Bernardo means BIG BIG RATINGS WOOHOO NORTH AMERICAN DANCE PARTY! WHO IS DRIVING? BEAR IS DRIVING! HOW CAN THIS BE?
Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko arrived in Toronto yesterday to tell us all how awesome Ukraine is, and how calling it "the Ukraine" is so 1997, and generally looking a whole lot better than he was a few years back when his political rivals poisoned him. So good for him, getting over the poisoning and all.
Ottawa is abuzz that somebody set up Maxime Bernier in the missing-classified-documents scandal. Torontoist would like to advance its own radical theory here: Maxime Bernier is stupid and did something stupid because he is stupid.
Stephen Harper defended Canada's environmental record at a United Nations environmental conference yesterday. If you imagine Harper saying "no, we are too worried about the environment and stuff," that more or less sums it up.
Finally, Roy Halladay took over the American league lead in strikeouts as he led the Jays to a win yesterday. Torontoist would also like to point out that Roy Halladay has a cool baseball nickname ("Doc Halladay"), because not enough players these days have cool baseball nicknames.

Last two links are broken and that last sentence about Halladay just doesn't make sense.
And, the link to the Star Harper story doesn't work.
Nice Clerks: TAS reference, Bird.
"Korean animation studio!"
Fixed?
Halladay's baseball nickname is Doc. Doc Halladay. Green Sulfur is right - that sentence doesn't make sense on it's own.
V is right. But Roy is also a nickname. Harry Leroy Halladay III is his legal name.
Fixed?
I believe Harper's argument was "In 1992 [when I had no say in the matter] we did stuff. SO THERE!"
Thanks, Steve.
The 60% figure is there most likely because there already exists a federal law capping interest at that level. Somehow, the payday industry is either exempt at present or the rule isn't enforced, I am not sure which. But if the recommendation in question passes in ON, it will simply bring the province in line with law already on books but not in force.
Cheri DiNovo (NDP MPP) and Peggy Nash (NDP MP) have been very active to try and legislate pay day loan companies.
Check out Cheri's website and read her release about her work:

A pay day loan storefront opening in your neighbourhood is the opposite of a Friendly Thai. I suppose a pawn shop or dollar store might be the opposite of a Starbucks.
