Remember when the town crier would stand on Yonge Street and shout his hear-say and hear-ye, passing out copies of the daily news for a penny a pop? Yeah, us neither. The fast-spreading news of today is a far cry from days of old (take us for example), and we'll bet you didn't see what was coming next. But tomorrow at the corner of Queen and John, you just might.

Walk past Pages and you might pass over an innocent-looking newspaper box, but if you peer a little closer, you'll notice the display window doesn't house today's Star—it's a screen. And the headline story? Whatever you want it to be. Passers-by can text-message breaking news, and upload photos on their mobile phones to the "Soap Box," and earn themselves their first cover story (and while it's across the street from MuchMusic, the home of broadcasting text-message break-ups and i <3 u posts, we'd recommend something more newsy).

The Soap Box is part of tomorrow's Science Rendez-Vous, a free, day-long event to give Torontonians a preview of what's going down at the OCAD's Mobile Experience Lab, Portage. The Soap Box is one of three interactive displays in the entertainment district, alongside the Sound Sculpture (corner of Stephanie and John), and Cycle Erasure (appropriately located at Urbane Cyclist). Research leaders from OCAD (University) will be on hand to explain their projects at all three locations. We'd remind you to bring your crackberrys, but if you're anything like us, they're already in your back pocket.
