Illustration Sunday: Jane “Janus” Jacobs

2008_05_04_IS_JANEJACOBS.jpg
Today is Jane Jacobs Day in Toronto, marking the date of her birth. If you hurry, you might still catch a walking tour honouring our celebrated urban thinker.
Much like Janus—the two-headed Roman god capable of seeing both past and future—Jacobs’s writings on urban development were considered visionary. Just as Janus represents change or transition, Jacobs was a force for change. She helped stop the Spadina Expressway proposal, and her ideas influence urban planning to this day.
When you’re out for a walk today, remember what Jane said: “Eyes on the Street.”

It seems logical that a socialist city would idolize the leaders of its demented revolution like this.
On an aside, when will Toronto declare a city wide holiday in honour of me?

  • jw03

Just for you, PickleToes, I believe every February 30 is hereby declared “Internet Troll Day” in the City of Toronto.

  • PickleToes

Just because I’m not a hippy leftist does not make me a troll. Nonetheless, I accept your gracious offer and rejoice in my new-found fame.

  • Kevin McBride

Great—February 30th is now marked on my calender as Internet Troll Day. What’s an appropriate gift for the occasion?

  • PickleToes

Kevin McBride: How about a vote for Stephen Harper in the next federal election?

  • Kevin McBride

@pickletoes – Don’t you know that a hippy leftist could never in good conscience vote for Stephen Harper?

  • PickleToes

Awww, well a guy can dream… Unless of course the OHRC is now out censoring thoughts.

  • EricSmith

Hippie leftists are only hippie leftists out of malice. They know perfectly well whom to vote for, but they pick the commie rat every time, just to spit in the eye of decent folk.

  • PickleToes

Good for you Eric. You are right to oppose decent people to the hippies and the Communists.

  • Vincent Clement

Opposing freeways does not make one a socialist. PickleToes, if you actually read her work and writings, you would know that Jane Jacobs was no fan government urban planning. She was a fan spontaneity, of letting individuals decide what was best.

  • PickleToes

I don’t know what else to call someone who would work to get Comrade Miller elected.

  • spacejack

Pickle, just how right wing are you? Even most libertarians acknowledge that infrastructure (like roads) need to be built by government. If you agree with that, then it’s just a matter of asking “how do we best design these roadways?” It’s not really a left/right thing.

  • David Topping

As communists/socialists/lefists/hippies, surely we’ve all got better things to do than argue with internet trolls, right? I think Jane Jacobs’s legacy is safe from the scourge of PickleToes.

I’m not a troll, I’m a person! You need to transcend this hate you harbour against me. I try not to (and to my knowledge I haven’t) label the individual users of this site because I don’t personally know anybody. But I wont hesitate to characterise the themes and people discussed in the articles. If I wasn’t white I’d seek the help of the OHRC in combatting the hate you have towards me.

  • Toby von Meistersinger

She defeated the evil Robert Moses in New York in his plans to build expressways that would have ruined the city.

  • Skippy the Magical Racegoat

    “I’m not a troll, I’m a person!”
That right there nearly broke my heart. You people should be ashamed about dehumanizing PickleToes like that.
